Technical SEO does not replace useful content. It makes sure search engines can discover, understand and present that content correctly. For a small business, a sound foundation matters more than maximising the score in every SEO tool.
1. Indexing and primary URLs
Confirm that important pages are not accidentally set to noindex and that robots.txt permits crawling. Each page should have one canonical URL. Test domains, obsolete addresses and alternative hosts should redirect permanently to the chosen domain.
2. Sitemap and Search Console
The XML sitemap should include only published, indexable pages. Submit it in Google Search Console and inspect whether important URLs have been discovered. Testing an individual URL often gives more useful information than a general SEO score.
3. Headings and metadata
Each page needs one clear main heading. Write a page-specific title and meta description that explain why the result is worth opening. Avoid publishing many nearly identical service pages merely to target small keyword variations.
4. Internal links and structure
Link service pages from the homepage and from genuinely relevant articles. Descriptive link text such as “ecommerce integrations” helps users and search engines more than “click here”. Breadcrumbs can clarify the structure of a larger site.
5. Performance and mobile use
Optimise the largest visible image, fonts and unnecessary scripts. Review Core Web Vitals using real-user data when available. Test navigation, buttons, forms and text readability on a small screen.
6. Images and accessibility
Use appropriately sized WebP or AVIF images and meaningful alternative text for informative images. Decorative images can use an empty alt attribute. File names alone do not create rankings, but excessive file size harms the user experience.
7. Structured data and measurement
Organization, Person, Article and BreadcrumbList markup can help search engines interpret a page, but it must match visible content. Analytics should start only after consent where required, and important enquiries should be measured.
Verify the effect of changes
Technical SEO is maintenance rather than a one-time trick. Monitor indexing, search queries and errors in Search Console. A technical audit can organise improvements by likely impact and effort.
